Activities Included:
HIKING & CANOEING

Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge is situated at the north end of five-mile long Iniakuk Lake. Take an early morning stroll along the beautiful sand and gravel beaches of Iniakuk Lake as the sun comes over the surrounding 4,000 foot peaks marking the onset of the southern Brooks Range. Spend the day in a canoe exploring coves and inlets, or pick out a scenic ridge and climb it. Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge is well-situated for hiking opportunities at every fitness level and we encourage guests to discover the wilderness off the beaten path, at their own pace.

Our guides will take you by motor boat or canoe around Iniakuk Lake, stopping to hike, photograph or relax and enjoy a shore lunch. The views and reflections off the water are fantastic; the air is fresh and clear. There are no jet skis or airboats to interrupt the many ducks and loons that live on the lake.

WILDLIFE VIEWING
Black and grizzly bear, moose, and caribou roam this land where humans are a minority and the top of the food chain is up for grabs. While it is possible to see large game around Iniakuk Lake, a flight-seeing trip offers the best opportunity to see both the land and the animals in a truly wild setting. See our All-Inclusive Tours for more information.

FISHING
Lake Trout and Northern Pike are abundant, while Arctic Grayling congregate in the crystal-clear pools of the outlet. Spin-cast for Northern Pike, the alligator of the north, from a flat-bottom boat or from shore. They are typically 6-8 pounds, but some monsters weigh in the neighborhood of 20 pounds. Trolling for feisty Lake Trout is good throughout the summer, but best in late June, shortly after the ice has left the lake or mid-August as they begin to spawn. Dry fly-fishing for Arctic Grayling with a 3-weight ro
d is as good as it gets. The feisty sailfish are a treat for beginner and expert alike. The lake is 200 feet deep in the center and ice bound for seven months of the year. Fishing Iniakuk Lake is catch-and-release.

BIRD WATCHING
Opportunities for viewing wildlife and bird watching are endless, depending on the time of year of your stay.

Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge is the only luxury wilderness lodge offering privately-owned accommodations at our wilderness cabins within the Gates of the Arctic National Park. These vacation destinations are for adventurous, independent travelers. We provide a guide for every group at any fitness level and adjust all services to suit individual needs.

The main difference between the Gates of the Arctic Caribou Cabin and the Arrigetch Peaks Wilderness Cabin is ecosystem. Thirty miles north of tree line, tundra and a wide open valley surround the Gates of the Arctic Caribou Cabin. The lake is at 3,000 feet above sea level and the surrounding peaks are at 4,500 feet so hiking is a gentle 1,500 feet at most and one can top out in 90 minutes or less. The lack of trees allows for much better wildlife viewing as well and in the month of August we can almost guarantee a wildlife encounter as the caribou move through the area followed by grizzlies and wolves. July on the tundra has less wildlife and more mosquitoes, so unless you have prior experience with Alaskan mosquitoes, we discourage trips on the tundra before August.

The Arrigetch Peaks Wilderness cabin could have starred in "Jeremiah Johnson" with Robert Redford. It is 1,000 feet above sea level surrounded by 5,000 foot peaks with views of 7,000 and 8,000 foot peaks just a few miles away. It is right on the Alatna Rive so the sound of the river comes in the screen door.

We are offering an exciting new trip for 2008. Our guests land with their guide ten miles upriver of the cabin, float down to the cabin in inflatable boats, spend one or two nights at the cabin, then float downriver another five miles and get scooped up by privately-chartered floatplane for the return flight to The Lodge or Bettles depending on itineraries.

The Alatna River is calm and peaceful and requires no paddling experience. Relax in inflatable canoes and let the current do the work. The surrounding peaks take 2-3 hours to summit but offer stunning views within 20-30 minutes once above tree line.
